Every year we make a pledge to ourselves to improve in some way. For many of us, that means losing a bit of weight – particularly if we have some to lose. Many of us compound this problem some times by doing something called buying down a size.
Let me start off by saying that losing weight is a touchy subject for many. On one hand, we should all strive to accept who we are. For many of us plus size girls, the idea that we might one day look like a rail thin supermodel isnt really realistic. On the other hand, losing weight is good for your health and that certainly is something to take seriously.
The idea of setting a goal to lose weight is a noble one and I encourage you to do it if your really want to. That being said, you should be careful when evaluating just how much you are going to lose and how much money you should spend in that regard. This is a concept known as “buying down a size.”
Buying down a size is exactly what it sounds like – you buy size smaller than your own in anticipation of losing weight. Some women do this as a means of motivating themselves to stick with a diet plan or to go to the gym when they would really prefer to sit down and just watch the Bachelor or American Idol. There is nothing wrong with this, and motivation is always a good thing to get your through the rough patches.
The strategy of buying down a size, however, can go horribly wrong. How? It goes really wrong if you completely redo your wardrobe in anticipation of meeting your dieting goals. You spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on new outfits and then try to diet down to them.
Two problems typically arrive from this approach. The first is obvious – you dont meet your weight loss goals and the clothes dont fit! The second problem is just as subtle if you think it through. As you lose weight, your size will shrink as well. The problem, however, is your body will not lose weight uniformly. You might lose more weight in your hips or in your thighs or your bust line and so on. As the shape of your body changes, the clothes you purchase might fit from a size perspective, but the cut will be wrong for your body.
If you are hell bent on losing weight this year, I hope you succeed. Find motivation wherever you can, but be careful about spending money unwisely. These days, we all have to watch every dollar.
